 We all have our own preconceived notions and myths that close the doors to opportunities of success in the future. A commonly held myth is that education is only valid if it has been pursued through long years of attending classes on a university campus. We still find it hard to believe that a perfectly valid degree can be legitimately earned by correspondence; and yet, it is possible. In fact, the Department of Human Resources of many companies have a special regard for those employees that exhibit the willpower, responsibility, motivation, and capacity for self-improvement needed for ongoing learning at the workplace

We forget that education is only a means of providing us with the tools to accomplish increasingly qualified tasks in our professional career. If, because of our prior experience, we are already qualified to accomplish some of these tasks, the level of learning required of us will be much lower than if we lack such professional knowledge. For this reason, at the moment of designing the student’s academic program, it would be unfair to disregard all the knowledge that the student has accumulated along his/her professional life. What is really important is what the student know, not how he/she acquired this knowledge

Clearly, our capacity for learning is higher in adulthood, after we have accumulated a number of years of professional experience, than when we are young and inexperienced. The reason for this is very simple: in our youth, when we decide to pursue an education, we lack the capacity to understand how to use and apply the knowledge we are being exposed to. Thus, we resort to memorization, falsely believing that we are actually learning what we are memorizing. However, shortly after, we forget everything. This is because our brain functions efficiently: it simply discards information that lacks any practical application, whether intellectual or emotional. Instead, after years of accumulating experience, we acquire the capacity to identify that which will enable us to accomplish our professional functions more efficiently. A casual conversation, a good book, or even a speech are thus permanently stored in our mind with no memorization involved

We are not more efficient because we study more or because we read more, but because we know how to better apply knowledge in real-life scenarios. Studying and reading more allow us to become more scholarly and better educated, but learning to apply knowledge practically is what enables us to make sound decisions and act sensibly in life. And this is exactly the type of knowledge that we will need to succeed in the professional world. It is by yielding positive results and finding solutions that the quality of our education is made evidently. We are all probably tired of listening to success stories of people with little education. In such situations, we tend to wonder, “how did they do it?” The answer is simple: they applied their knowledge practically and they capitalized on it

Undoubtedly the best education an individual can receive is by attending classes on a regular basis. In this ideal situation, students can meet with their professors, make us of the school facilities and benefit from the study environment. However, not everyone has the time and money needed to invest on this type of education. It is in this case that some people begin to look for an alternative path to obtain a valuable education and a university degree
